Helpful Websites

The purpose of this resources section is to offer helpful information for individuals, family, and other individuals who desire to understand the symptoms and attributes of commonly treated psychological conditions. This information can be particularly helpful for coping with one’s own condition or that of a loved one.

We strive to make the information thorough and understandable by the average person. However, a psychological condition can take on various forms; therefore, what we’ve offered here are general coping strategies. Please note that they may not apply to everyone and it is important to discuss specific situations with your provider.

We are always adding new information to this section, for your information. Therefore, please check back often for information that may prove helpful to you.

National Alliance on Mental Illness – This is a great, comprehensive website. It is an organization that was created to educate and provide support for people who suffer from a mental illness. This is a great source of information on what mental illness is, with pages dedicated to explaining particular mental illnesses, what medications are available to treat particular illnesses and what side-effects the medication may cause. There are also communities that you can join based either on common interests (such as faith or parenting) or on mental disorders. The communities are primarily for getting support and tips on coping with an illness or coping with living with someone with an illness, but they also function to alert you about the latest medical research on a particular illness.

National Institute of Mental Health – This is a major organization that funds research on mental illness. It is a great place to learn about how mental illness works and the latest research.

CHADD – Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder – This is a non-profit organization that publishes the “Attention!” magazine. Their website offers information on AD/HD, and it has helpful tips on coping with (and helping your child or student cope with) AD/HD. The organization is also proactive in student assistance programs in primary and secondary schools.

ParentsMedGuide – This has two guides: one on treating AD/HD through medications and one on treating depression through medications.

Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation – This has resources for parents with children suffering from bipolar disorder. It has information on the disorder, medications used to treat it, community support groups (both local and online) and legal information.

Mayo Clinic Health Solutions – This award-winning consumer website offers health information and self-improvement tools. Their medical experts and editorial professionals bring you access to the knowledge and experience of Mayo Clinic for all your consumer health information needs, from cancer, diabetes and heart disease to nutrition, exercise and pregnancy.

WebMD – This also has great resources on mental illness. They have information on symptoms of illnesses and medication treatments as well as support communities and other helpful resources.

MedicineNet – This site is owned by WebMD and is a great resource. In particular, it has a dictionary of medical terms.
